The Right To Live Initiative

South Africa’s Constitution guarantees every person the right to life, dignity and freedom from violence. Yet women and children continue to face devastating levels of gender-based violence, femicide and violent crime.

Through the Right to Live Initiative, Ubuntu Legacy NPC is calling for a national conversation about whether South Africa’s constitutional, criminal justice and sentencing frameworks are adequately protecting the lives and rights of women and children.

We believe that the right to life must mean more than a promise on paper. It must be supported by meaningful protection, effective justice and accountability.

Our Mission

To advance the constitutional protection of women and children through evidence-based advocacy, legal and policy reform, public engagement and accountability. We aim to bring together civil society, legal experts, survivors, affected families, communities and policymakers to examine systemic failures and advocate for meaningful change.

Protection

Strengthening the State’s responsibility to prevent violence and protect women and children from foreseeable harm.

Accountability

Examining failures within the criminal justice system, including policing, investigations, prosecutions, sentencing and parole.

Justice

Advocating for a justice system that recognises and protects the constitutional rights, dignity and safety of victims and survivors.

Constitutional Reform

Calling for a comprehensive review of whether South Africa’s existing constitutional and criminal justice framework adequately protects women and children from extreme violence.

Join the Movement

The Right to Live Initiative is a call to action for every South African who believes that women and children deserve meaningful protection, dignity and justice. We invite civil society organisations, legal professionals, researchers, survivor organisations, affected families, community leaders, businesses and concerned citizens to join us in building a national movement for constitutional protection and accountability.
